Yes, in many meaningful ways Brazil has surpassed Portugal, its former colonial master:

  • Population: Brazil has over 200 million people, making it the largest Lusophone country by far. Portugal has only 10 million.
  • Economy: Brazil has the 9th largest economy in the world, with a GDP of $1.8 trillion. Portugal’s GDP is only $252 billion.
  • Global influence: Brazil wields more soft power internationally through culture, business and diplomacy. Its culture and language have broader global reach.
  • Discovery & resources: Portugal initially exploited Brazil for its natural wealth, but Brazil is now an agricultural powerhouse and industrialized economy.
  • Growth outlook: Brazil remains one of the world’s strongest emerging markets, while Portugal struggles with debt and stagnation despite EU membership.
  • Military: Brazil has one of the most powerful militaries in Latin America, spending billions, compared to Portugal’s small armed forces.
  • Innovation: Brazil is a regional leader in sectors like aviation, mining, IT and renewable energy. Portuguese innovation lags.
  • Autonomy: Brazil has been an independent nation since 1822, governing itself. Portugal remains relatively dependent on the EU economically.

So politically, economically, demographically and by most available metrics, Brazil has unequivocally outperformed and surpassed Portugal, whose global standing it has far eclipsed as the dominant Lusophone power.
