She has completed a doctorate in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of New Mexico. This is one of the best self-learning books I;ve seen. The answers to excercises are in the back, allowing you to get immediate feedback on whether you're getting the point the author is teaching you. It has a clear writing style, explaining grammatic points, and clearly marks areas needing emphasis. I am using it in conjunction with lessons from a teacher, and even she, when I showed it to her found it good. It fills the need for constant review that you have with any language you learn other than your native one. The CD is clear. I'd definitely say, having seen what's out there in Brazilian Portuguese books, it should work well for most learners of this sweet and beautiful language. It's also clearly Brazilian Portuguese, so you;re not getting the language used in Portugal. This is money well spent. I gave it four stars because it lacks transliterations, which I find helpful, and because I've not completed it yet.

I am a retired Spanish teacher with a PhD. This is an average quality into to Portuguese. One main thing it lacks is the use of Portuguese accents and diacriticals. It also lacks decent tables on how demonstratives are used.
Any college Portuguese textbook might be a better choice. The recording is adequate.

The way the book is structured is great, but there are lots of mistakes. A Brazilian and an English native speaker should correct the mistakes. I have been recommending this book to my students but I always have to pay close attention because it is not always reliable. The audio just works for a mobile phone, not on the computer, which frustrated me.
