How to Use HelloTalk App To Learn Portuguese

May 13, 2015 By Josh Plotkin Leave a Comment

Today I want to share with you one of the most useful apps for learning Brazilian Portuguese to come out on the app store in recent years.

Hellotalk is a language learning app that helps you find Brazilians who are interested in doing a language exchange. It has a huge userbase and is available for more than 100 languages.

It’s perfect if you’re trying to find someone who wants to help you learn Portuguese in exchange for helping them learn their language.

Features Overview

Some of the features of Hellotalk are pretty unique and make it a really interesting app to use.

  1. Selection of languages – Since you’re reading BrazilianGringo you’re probably most interested in learning Portuguese, but if you wanted to learn other languages you have the option here.
This also comes into play if you’re willing to do a language exchange for another language you speak. Many Brazilians want to learn German or French, so this can help you find more partners.
  2. Group Chat – For when you make a lot of friends.
  3. Search by location, age, nationality, proximity, etc.
This is really cool if you’re planning an upcoming trip to a certain region in Brazil and want to meet people from that place.
  4. Text to voice/voice to text – Useful for improving your speaking/listening
  5. Free calls on Wi-Fi – For when you want to chat with your partner for longer language exchanges.
  6. In app translation tool – No need to switch between apps to figure out what you want to say.

Speaking Practice Made Easy

One of the great things about Hellotalk is the voice recognition feature which allows you to transcribe your messages.

This means you can practice speaking with the app without worrying about speaking incorrectly. Just say something to your partner and if it’s close enough you’ll keep the conversation rolling.

This is really useful when you’re just starting out and need a slower pace to the conversation, but still want to get speaking practice. It’s a great way to build up your confidence until you’re ready to send actual voice messages to your partner.

Finding Brazilians Near You to Practice With

This is one of the coolest features of the app. You can actually search for people by location. This is especially useful if you’re outside of Brazil and are looking to make local Brazilian friends, or if you’re freshly arrived in Brazil and looking for people to meet up with.

Keep in mind that Brazilians are using this app to learn English, and if you meet up with them you’ll likely end up helping them with their English, or showing them around your city.

Also it should be stated that Hellotalk is not a dating app and that your primary intention should be language learning when interacting with people through the app. If you try to zoom in on someone’s picture, Hellotalk will remind you that it’s not a dating app.

Have you downloaded Hellotalk yet?

I don’t want to make this review too long because it really is a simple app and it doesn’t need to be made more complicated.

Go find it on the App store or Google Play store and start experimenting it with it for yourself. You’ll have a lot of fun and you’ll learn a lot. Enjoy.
