I was recently contacted by a representative of British Consulate in Rio with an opportunity that might be interesting for some of you living in Brazil.
Rio 2016 is looking to recruit foreign volunteers for the Olympic Games. They are looking to increase the number of applications, particularly British citizens with Portuguese knowledge and experience in Brazil. Below is the message that was forwarded to me:
Do you want to take part in the Rio Olympics and Paralympics?
Here’s your chance. Rio 2016 is inviting applications from people willing to volunteer during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in August/September 2016. 70,000 will be selected to assist in a wide variety of roles. You will need to commit to ten days of volunteering during either the Olympics or the Paralympics, as well as some mandatory training in advance. Having good English and Portuguese is a definite advantage but not essential.
About the actual volunteer programme, they are a looking for the total of 70.000 volunteers (45.000 for the Olympics and 25.000 for the Paralympics). They mentioned that they already have around 80.000 applications, but they want a lot more, specially from different countries. They already got applications from many countries, the UK is on third place right now in numbers of applicants, only behind China and Russia.
All applications are done online as well as the selection process for foreigners, the selected ones will receive Portuguese online training and onsite training a couple of weeks before the game. Volunteers from different countries will be considered guests from Brazil, with Rio 2016 facilitating the Visa Process (you can find more details about the programme here).
